Seefeld, Austria

If you’ve come to get away from it all, you have found the right spot.

Seefeld photo, Tirol, AustriaIf you had your mind set on wild skiing and late-night partying, you are in the wrong place.

Here is a Seefeld village map.

Seefeld is an Austrian purpose-built resort that was developed far before modern architecture came into fashion and ski lifts made downhill skiing an end in itself. It was created more than 50 years ago. This resort was designed as a place to get away from the pressure of everyday life and work. It still is a place to relax and to refresh one’s spirit.

The village has been laid out with almost no through traffic and with a town center where vacationers can meet, talk, have a coffee or drink, and enjoy events. The look is pure modern Alpine with lots of peaked roofs and wooden balconies, but without the large barns that dotted the original Alpine resorts.

Seefeld also doesn’t present itself as a go-for-broke downhill ski and snowboarding resort. This is a resort where relaxation is de rigueur on the slopes and off of them. Enjoyment, not excitement is the aim.

This resort is the capital of cross-country skiing in Austria, and many claim that it is one of the premier spots for skinny skiing in the world. Indeed, the cross-country and biathlon Olympic competitions have been held here twice when the international winter games were headquartered in Innsbruck.

Seefeld also offers 143 kilometers of walking trails and plenty of additional activities for families. Between cross-country, Nordic walking, mellow slopes, swimming and dining, most visitors and their families succeed in escaping the pressures of the outside world, if only for a few days.

Nearby Garmisch and Mittenwald in Germany provide additional skiing and activities. And Innsbruck is only 20 minutes away by car and about a half hour away by a spectacular train ride. Go there for plenty of cultural action, shopping and skiing if you choose. And for those with travel on their minds, the Brenner Pass crossing into Italy, with its shopping and dining, is less than an hour’s drive.
