Sporthotel Royer (200, fax 20094; €€) is a four-star hotel in Schladming. This is a modern hotel with pool, indoor tennis and squash courts, sauna and pony rides. It is the favorite of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who grew up in a small village not far away. The hotel lounge and bar feature thick leather chairs around a fireplace. Guestrooms have plenty of closet space, CNN on the television, hair dryers and showers over the tub.

Posthotel Schladming (22571, fax 225718; €€) In Schladming is the oldest, most traditional hotel on the main square. It's only a three-minute walk from the Planai lift and has a new sauna area.

Hotel Zum Stadttor (24525; fax 2452550, €€) is also In Schladming. The hotel has a whirlpool and sauna and is about a five-minute walk from the Planai lift.

Hotel Pichlmayrgut (06454-7305; €€; photo right) If you want to stay in an old Austrian estate, this fills the bill. Amenities include indoor tennis, pool, sauna and steambath. Pichl lifts and the 4 Mountain Schischaukel are a five-minute walk from the hotel.

Hotel Neue Post (22105, fax 221055; €; photo below) is smack in the middle of town.

Right across from the Planai lift station is Gästehaus Handlos (22633, 226333; €€). Though it is B&B only, it can’t get much more convenient.

Hotel-Gasthof Kirchenwirt (22435, fax 2243516; €) is in the town center.

The Schloss Moosheim (03685-23231; €€) is a bit out of the way, but you get to sleep in a real castle. It adds to your vacation stories and has good transport to the lifts.

Gasthof Herrschaftstaverne (03686-2392; €€) is a good family spot only 200 meters from the base of the cable car. It has an indoor pool, sauna and curling alley.

For those looking to save money, try staying at Jugend & Familiengastehaus (24531, fax 2453188; €). Plus there are dozens of B&Bs cost between €20 and €30 per person.

Stay near the top of the Hauser Kaibling in the Krummholzhütte, where you have to share a bathroom and shower, for €26–€31 a day, half pension. You get a room near the summit and about a 10-minute schuss down the mountain right out the door.

One of the best hotels in the area is Alpengasthof Peter Rosegger (03687-81223; €€) in Ramsau. It is perfect for those planning cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.The restaurant (only for hotel guests) is considered one of the best in the area.

The Dachstein-Tauern Region has a series of lodging deals that include seven nights lodging, half pension or breakfast only, six days of lifts and pool access. Prices are per person based on double occupancy during mid January.

Apartments, condominiums, flats
There are hundreds of units available in all shapes and sizes. Depending on the number of people in your group and the time of the year, prices per person should range from €15-€30 a night. In most cases linens and towels are extra (€25 for the week).

Contact the tourist office and describe what you want and how much you will pay. The office has a computer system that tracks all bookings in the area.
