Hemsedal, Norway

Hemsedal is Norway's largest ski and snowboard resort.

The mountain looms above the treeline with wide-open snowfields at the higher altitudes and trails tracing paths through the trees to the base area. Some 48 trails wind down 2,600 feet of vertical drop.

Here is the map for the base area at Hemsedal Skicenter.

Though the skiing and snowboarding is good, the facilities at the area are sparse to say the least. The town of Hemsedal may define a one-horse town. Don't expect anything traditional or cozy here. Functional seems to be the rule of the resort. The scraggly collection of hotels and restaurants along the main street seems more of an industrial area rather than a resort center.

The town does function well, however. The mountain provides skiing and riding for everyone. Shuttle buses carry skiers from their hotels to the base of the lifts. Hotels are packed with merry makers. Discos pulse with noise. And restaurants manage to serve excellent meals.

One Norwegian Krone is worth about 17¢. Or, US1 = NOK6.
