Courchevel in Les Trois Vallées, France

This is perhaps the most cosmopolitan of the four villages in the Trois Vallees.

Courchevel photo, Les Trois Vallees, FranceIt was France’s first real jet-set resort, created to cater to the upper crust and become the darling of those upper-crusties French Riviera group who didn’t flock to Megève.

Here is the interactive, Courchevel resort map.

Courchevel itself is really a series of smaller villages whose names reflect their heights in meters—Courchevel 1850, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1550 and so on. Courchevel 1300, also called Le Praz, is the quaintest, but its lower altitude may mean a sacrifice of snow for charm. There is another village, Saint-Bon on a fifth level (but with no lifts). Courchevel l850 is the highest and priciest, but it’s also where most trails run right outside your hotel or apartment door. It is where the best restaurants are found and where the nightlife continues until the sky begins to lighten with the coming day. Built for ski-in/ski-out, Courchevel 1850 really works. Its lift system covers both sides of the valley. The world’s largest cablecar, heading up to La Saulire (8,885 feet), connects Courchevel to the rest of the Les Trois Vallées area.

La Tania is a small, separate, new resort set at the base of the ridge separating Courchevel and Méribel. It has its own relatively quiet nightlife. From La Tania it is about a half-hour bus ride to either of the larger resorts straddling the ridge.
